Wilderness Investigations (WI) is a new wilderness education program offered by the Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center. This rigorous, standards-correlated, and place-based toolkit includes live teacher training workshops, printed and downloadable teaching materials, online investigation-specific training, and a WI teacher networking site for sharing, problem-solving, and WI program announcements. WI topics are focused on key elements of the Wilderness Act of 1964 and include classroom, field, and family components. Every WI investigation includes project-based/hands-on activities, and many lead to service learning opportunities. WI is subject-integrated and geared mainly to 5th-8th grade audiences (but is easily adapted for other grades). Check the training calendar for scheduled workshops.
The Wilderness Education Training Manual Series offer wilderness managers, educators and the interested public the opportunity to download curriculum, overheads, and other materials. To access these files you must first download Acrobat Reader 3.0, then follow the instructions on the Adobe web site to install this software. The following books are free. They can be viewed on-screen, saved, or printed.
Developed and released in 2004, Wilderness Views is an interactive, online, teaching tool helping students learn about and explore wilderness. From "What is wilderness?" to "How is wilderness managed?" the module provides insight into the unique resource of wilderness in the United States. Through an interactive timeline students can learn the history of wilderness leading up to the enactment of the Wilderness Act in 1964. Historic and current perspectives on "Why wilderness?" are presented through biographical sketches and video interviews. Management scenarios place the student into a wilderness manager's role by presenting real-life situations that guide individuals through a decision-making process considering consequences and outcomes. A teacher resources section provides teachers with lessons and information to incorporate the module into classroom learning. Click on the link below to explore Wilderness Views.
