Classroom & Hybrid Training Courses
The Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center offers a variety of classroom-style courses for Federal government land managers including one annual National Wilderness Leadership Training Course, 3-5 Regional Wilderness Stewardship Training Courses, periodic Wilderness Interpretation and Education Workshops, and multiple agency-specific Unit Wilderness Workshops. Wilderness Investigations Teacher Workshops are also offered for K-12 educators. View current and upcoming classroom and online courses, or webinars.
On-Demand Online Training Courses
The Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center offers a variety of free self-paced online courses in partnership with the Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands at Indiana University. Twelve self-paced online wilderness courses are currently available online at no cost to wilderness management agency employees.
The Fundamentals of Wilderness Stewardship Certificate Program comprises four online courses that explore the history, philosophy, and application of wilderness law, regulation and policy in the United States.
Distance Education Courses
In partnership with the University of Montana we offer higher education courses. Generally intended for those looking to start land management careers or to advance in a wilderness career track, courses include: Wilderness in the American Context, American Wilderness Philosophy and Policy, Management of the Wilderness Resource, Managing Wilderness Ecosystems, Managing Recreation Resources, Managing Recreation Resources in a Wilderness Setting, Wilderness Management Planning and Wilderness Planning Theory, Management Frameworks and Application. These courses are available both online and through correspondence. Target audience: Federal land managers, city and state land and recreation planners, conservation organization members, educators, international wildland managers, students.
Tuition: $850-$1250 for 4 credit courses, both undergraduate and graduate credit available.
Webinars
Each year the Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center offers webinars on different contemporary wilderness stewardship topics. Webinar content is tailored for a practitioner audience including agency land management staffs and non-profit wilderness organization employees. All webinars are free and archived for later viewing. Past webinar have included topics such as camping impacts in wilderness, drones and wilderness and scientific proposals for research done in wilderness, wilderness and accessibility.
Wilderness Technical Core Competencies
Wilderness managers and other employees having responsibility for wilderness, no matter how limited, can use the competencies below to identify gaps between existing and needed wilderness knowledge, skills, and abilities. With this information they and their supervisors can develop and prioritize Individual Training and Development Plans. These competencies can be used by each agency to identify training gaps and to guide development and delivery of training courses specifically designed to bridge these gaps.
